WILMINGTON — Incumbent Jonathan Barfield will run for a fourth term as a New Hanover County commissioner.

Three seats are up for election in 2020, including Barfield’s. Two of the seats are uncontested as current commissioners Woody White and Patricia Kusek have both announced they will not seek reelection. Barfield has served on the board since 2008.

According to a release from Barfield’s campaign, several recent county developments will factor in his campaign, including recent decisions to cut funding for WAVE and to explore the sale of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

“I’ve made it clear that, while I understand the need to look at ways to make our county hospital viable for years to come, I do not support selling this great gem that is our county hospital, and that any thriving metro city must have in place an accessible public transportation system. Collectively working to bring innovative ideas and solutions to a place we all call home will always yield a great outcome. These issues are worth fighting for because our future depends on it,” Barfield said in a release.
