NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Retired U.S. Army Colonel Marcia Morgan announced today she will make a second run for the North Carolina House.
Morgan is running for a seat in North Carolina House District 19, which covers southern New Hanover County, including the towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. Morgan, who is running as a progressive Democrat candidate, will attempt to build on her 2018 campaign against incumbent Republican Ted Davis, Jr. and Libertarian candidate David Perry; Davis received 17,957 (49.3%) votes to Morgan’s 17,075 (46.9%) with Perry receiving 1,389 (3.8%).
According to a Wednesday morning release, Morgan said if elected she would “fight to raise teacher pay in a way that benefits educators at all stages of their career… support the expansion of Medicaid and will stand strong against corporations and deregulation that jeopardizes our valuable natural resources … [and] work with my fellow representatives to affect positive economic and environmental changes for the people of my District and all of North Carolina.”
Morgan accused Davis of “refusing to move past partisan politics.”
“The Governor’s compromise budget included ALL of the local projects that Republicans had proposed–in addition to a meaningful increase in teacher pay, it included $110 million in hurricane relief as well as $8 million for Fort Fisher and $56.4 million for UNCW’s Randall Library. The people in District 19 want a representative in Raleigh who will work for the good of all citizens, not just a select few,” she said.
Prior to her 2018 run, Morgan served in the U.S. Army for 25 years before retiring, including assignments in Korea, Germany, and The Netherlands. Morgan held multiple command positions and served twice in the Pentagon, once with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Post-retirement, Morgan returned to the Pentagon as a contractor; she was later presented with a commendation for her work in resource logistics in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to her release.
“Throughout my life, as an educator and a career military officer, my motivation has been to serve and to care for others. While I’ve enjoyed the retired life and the freedom to do as I please, I cannot sit on the sidelines and watch our great state continue to move backward. While I do NOT have a political background, I DO have a strong sense of service to this community and a demonstrated ability to accomplish difficult tasks,” Morgan concluded.
