Shooting in Willard sends victim to ICU, suspect arrested for attempted murder

PENDER COUNTY — On Tuesday Pender County deputies responded to a reported shooting in Willard where they found Bobby Bennerman, 56, suffering from a gunshot would to the abdomen.

Bennerman was airlifted to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he underwent emergency medical surgery; he is now in the ICU but his health status remains unclear.

The shooting took place approximately a mile north of the Watha Town Hall on Jonestown Road.

“Responding deputies detained an individual, later identified as Lindale Smith, a short distance away from the scene of the shooting, Det. Sgt. G.K. Cromartie wrote in a press release Wednesday morning.

Smith was later charged with attempted first degree murder and sent to the Pender County Jail under a $300,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for today.

The case is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Pender County Sheriff’s Office at (910) 259-1212.
