Adoption alert: Pender shelter could be forced to euthanize dozens of cats for first time in years

PENDER COUNTY — The Pender County Animal Shelter is full and animals are at risk of being euthanized to make space — but it’s not too late to help.

Shelter Manager Jewell Horton said she, along with her staff, are working to find these cats homes and many of them have been sponsored, meaning fees have been waived for the adoption.

In a social media post, the animal shelter reached out to the community saying it would be the first time in years they would be forced to euthanize animals if they are not adopted out.

The post reads:

“That’s it folks… We just hit capacity… We have been begging all week for adopters, we have MANY FREE CATS and no adoptions… IF someone doesn’t come adopt these cat immediately we will euthanize for space in the next 24 hours for the first time in years. It is imminent! We don’t like it, we are fighting tears right now fighting for these cats! Society won’t slow down on the intakes and we have NO MORE ROOM! HELP! ADOPT! SHARE! SPONSOR! 910-259-1484”

Of the about 100 animals that are currently in the shelter’s system, about 70-80 of them are cats, Horton said.

For those unable to take in another pet, there are still plenty of ways to help out by sponsoring a cat or getting one to a rescue group, Horton said.

Horton has already agreed to stay late until 6 p.m. tonight to help get these cats homes and as long as space is made by people adopting some of the cats, no euthanasia will take place.
