Update: New York authorities offer $10,000 reward for teen suspect believed to be in New Hanover County

Updated Tuesday, May 7, 9 a.m. — Jamir Thompson, 15, has surrendered himself to the Yonkers Police Department.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Authorities from New York are offering a $10,000 reward as they search for a 15-year-old suspect accused of shooting a teenage girl in the head during an altercation with another man.

The incident took place in the city of Yonkers, just north of the New York City borough of The Bronx. According to the Yonkers Police Department, Jamir Thompson, 15, was attempting to forcibly take a gold chain from another person. An altercation ensued, and Thompon fired a 9mm handgun at the person he had attempted to rob.

The bullet struck 18-year-old Marilyn Cotto Montanez, an “innocent bystander,” instead, according to Yonkers police.

Thompson has a “violent criminal history,” according to Yonkers Police Commissioners Charles Gardner.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office (NHCSO) and Yonkers police believe Thompson may be in the New Hanover County area. The Yonkers Police Department is now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest; Yonkers police also noted “anyone who knowingly assists or harbors Thompson will be arrested and charged with Hindering Prosecution 1, a Class D Felony in the New York State Penal Law.”
