SOUTHEAST N.C. — Can I take my dog to the beach? It’s a question that starts making the rounds every spring and summer as the weather in the region gets nicer. But depending on what beach you are thinking about heading to, your four-legged friend might not be welcome.

Some beaches are open to dogs year-round while others strictly forbid them — before heading out it’s best to know what rules are in place, or you could end up facing fines.

Carolina Beach

  • All dogs are required to be on a leash at all times.
  • April 1st through September 30th, dogs are allowed on the beach during restricted hours before 9:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m. Dogs are not allowed on the beach between 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • October 1st through March 31st, dogs are allowed on the beach during all hours.
  • You must have on your person at all times a plastic or paper container that can be used to clean up and contain dog waste until it can be disposed of in an appropriate container. This container must be produced and shown, upon request, to anyone authorized to enforce this ordinance.

Wrightsville Beach

No dogs are allowed on the beaches in Wrightsville Beach from April 1 – Sept. 30, violators could face a $250 fine if caught.

Freeman Park

Good news for pooches heading out to Freeman Park, dogs are permitted year-round here.

  • Dogs are required to be on a leash from April 1st to September 30th.
  • From October 1st to March 31, dogs are allowed off a leash so long as they remain under voice command and the owner is within a reasonable distance from the pet.

Surf City

Another dog-friendly beach town, dogs are permitted on the beaches but must be leashed at all times.

Topsail Beach

Dogs are permitted at Topsail Beach, but like other locations, there are rules.

  • They must be on a leash 20 feet or less from May 15 through September 30th. At other times the dog must be under voice command of a responsible person but does not have to be on a leash.
  • The person must always be prepared to remove any “deposits” left by the dog. These regulations apply to the entire town including the beach.

Sunset Beach

Dogs are permitted at Sunset Beach in Brunswick County but during the summer months, they must be on leash.

  • Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 10 feet in length at all times
  • From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are not allowed on the beach from 8 am through 6 pm.
