CAROLINA BEACH — After months of delay the Carolina Beach Island Greenway is officially open — but another Carolina Beach park, Freeman Park is temporarily closing.
“After 6 years of funding acquisition, planning and construction we are very pleased to announce that the new 1.2-mile section of the Island Greenway is now officially open for public use. The 10-foot-wide paved multi-use path begins at Mike Chappell Park and winds southward through scenic wooded areas to the intersection of Alabama Avenue and Spot Lane,” according to a town press release.
Everyone knows the town is famous, or infamous, for its love of golf carts but they are not permitted on the Island Greenway.
“Use of the trail is strictly limited to bicycles and pedestrians – no motorized vehicles of any kind. Yes, this means no golf carts! Please be mindful and courteous to other trail uses – keep right; bicycles, scooters and skateboards yield to pedestrians; all dogs on leashes; remove all pet waste. Report all incidents to the Carolina Beach Police Department @ 910-458-2540 or dial 911,” according to the release.
Freeman Park
Freeman Park is no stranger to periodic closures and, starting today, it is closed for the removal of heavy equipment by the company conducting the beach nourishment project.
“The beach nourishment project in Carolina Beach will be completed soon! Freeman Park will temporarily close to the public beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, while Weeks Marine removes equipment and pipe that was used during the project. Once finished, Freeman Park will re-open and the Town will notify the public in a follow-up press release and by updating our website and Facebook pages,” according to the release.
