WILMINGTON — Internationally acclaimed acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have added Wilmington to their 2019 international tour, joining Berlin, Dublin, New York and other major cities.
Mexico City natives Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero have made a name for themselves by melding their childhood love of thrash metal with flamenco and jazz guitar — a perfect example of the resulting style is their arrangement of Metallica’s “Orion” on two nylon string guitars (it’s hard to image the late Cliff Burton wouldn’t approve).
After meeting in their teens, the two began playing as Rodrigo y Gabriela, and have since released four studio albums and several live recordings. They are currently touring ahead of the release of Mettavolution, their fifth studio album, due out in April.
Highlights from the album include a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Echoes,” the sprawling final track of the 1971 Meddle album, where Pink Floyd began developing the style they would cement on the later, concept-driven albums.
“We are big Pink Floyd fans,” the band said of the choice in a recent release. “That track, especially the LIVE IN POMPEII version means a lot to us — we even made a huge visual reference in our video for ‘Hanuman.’ Besides that, the lyrics are even more relevant now than they were 45 years ago. The search for knowledge about ourselves, it’s becoming a key element for survival these days. That’s what evolution is all about at the end of the day.”
Rodrigo y Gabriela will play the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington on Tuesday, June 4. For details and ticket information, visit www.rodgab.com/tour-dates or Ticketfly. Advance presale tickets go on sale today, general admission tickets go onsale at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15.
