SOUTHEAST N.C. — Heavy rainfalls over the past week have caused some concerns of flooding for several rivers in the Coastal Carolinas, but for now Wilmington seems to be out of harm’s way, however, localized rains could change that.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, New Hanover County and surrounding coastal regions can expect to see upwards of 2-3 inches of rain over the next few days.
According to NWS, “Due to [the] amount of rain received recently, numerous rivers in our area are forecast to rise to flood stage sometime this week (Lumberton River at Lumberton currently the only river in flood). Cape Fear at Lock and Dam 1 and Lynches River at Effingham may also rise to flood by the weekend.”
For the time being the Cape Fear River in Wilmington is not expected to hit flood levels.
“At the moment, the Cape Fear at Downtown Wilmington is expected to remain below flood stage during high tides at least through end of the week (forecasted levels go out to Friday),” according to the NWS.
Rain is expected throughout tonight and Thursday and thunderstorms capable of producing 20-mile-per-hour or stronger winds are possible.
