Update 8:30 a.m. — Officials have confirmed the ‘active shooter’ was, in fact, malfunctioning equipment. Topsail Elementary, Middle, and High schools remain on lockdown. All other schools have returned to normal operations.
8:00 a.m. – All Pender County schools in the eastern part of the county are on lockdown.
Buses already on route to South Topsail Elementary, North Topsail Elementary, and Surf City Schools will deliver students to those schools, which are lockdown. Parents should not bring students to these schools, according to Miranda Ferguson, Pender County schools spokesperson.
7:30 a.m. – Numerous law enforcement agencies are on the scene, including New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies, Wilmington Police Department officers, UNCW campus police, Topsail Police Department, and Pender County Sheriff’s deputies.
The Topsail High School campus is shut down, with all access roads barricaded by law enforcement.
School buses have been corralled at the Lowes Foods parking lot across from the school campus.
7:00 a.m. – No injuries reported.
According to the New Hanover County Sherriff’s Office, deputies responded after hearing about the incident on the news; NHCSO had no further information.
HAMPSTEAD — Pender County Sheriff’s deputies are on the scene of an active shooter call at Topsail High School.
According to the Pender County Sherrif’s Office, it is an active scene, with multiple units already at Topsail High School and others en route.
No other information was immediately available.
It is not known if there are students on the premises; Topsail High School’s homeroom bell is at 8:20 a.m., the call was placed around 6:30 a.m.
