Princess Street closure in downtown Wilmington will last two weeks

Routine building maintenance uncovered more serious issues, but the businesses affected expect to reopen quickly.

One block of Princess Street is closed between 2nd and 3rd streets so a private contractor can complete emergency structural repairs to a building located at 201 Princess Street. The closure is expected to last two weeks. The building contains apartments on upper floors and retail space on the first floor. Occupants of the building have been temporarily evacuated. After the building is stabilized, the contractor will perform additional repairs and install scaffolding around the building. The scaffolding will allow for pedestrian passage underneath. During this phase, intermittent lane closures and road closures can be expected on Princess Street as well as 2nd Street. The owner expects the work to be complete by the end of this summer.

WILMINGTON–A section of Princess Street in downtown Wilmington will be closed for much of June.

Princess Street will be closed at the intersection of 2nd Street for the next two weeks starting Thursday, June 7. The closure will allow for repairs to the building at 201 Princess St. on the northeast corner of the intersection, according to Wilmington Spokeswoman Malissa Talbert.

The intersection itself at Princess and 2nd streets will remain open, and 2nd Street will not closed. While no through traffic will be allowed for the next two weeks, much of the Princess Street block between 2nd and 3rd street is still open to traffic and on-street parking. Only, the stretch of Princess in front of Bespoke and Memory Lane Comics is closed.

The sidewalks remain open for pedestrians and all of the businesses on the street are open, except Memory Lane Comics, which was forced to temporarily closed.

According to Memory Lane co-owner Jake Motsinger, exterior repairs to the building uncovered more serious structural issues, requiring immediate efforts to stabilize the building.

Motsinger said the store will reopen soon, while external work continues.

“Once the internal stabilizers are in place, we can reopen and get back to doing what we do, most likely tomorrow (Friday),” Motsinger said. “We’ll probably have to use our side door, on 2nd Street, on and off, but we’ll be open while the repairs continue.”

While the city expects Princess Street to be closed for two weeks, intermittent closures may follow that throughout the summer, when necessitated by exterior building repairs.
