SOUTHEASTERN, NC—If you hear sirens Wednesday, it’s only a drill.
Duke Energy will be conducting its quarterly full volume nuclear siren testing Wednesday, April 11, at its nuclear energy facilities.
The siren testing is periodically administered to check Duke Energy’s disaster preparedness in the event of a nuclear station emergency.
Sirens are designed to exceed normal outdoor sounds, so residents in the area may hear the warning signals on Wednesday morning.
According to Duke Energy’s Nuclear Preparedness website, the testing should only last five to 30 seconds.
The test includes some of the 38 outdoor warning sirens located within 10 miles of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant, located just north of Southport. In New Hanover County, that 10 miles includes all of Kure Beach and Carolina Beach and the southern tip of Federal Point with a siren at the old Coast Guard LORAN station on River Road.
A sample of what the siren will sound like can be previewed here.
