Every week, Port City Daily Assistant Editor Ben Schachtman joins 98.3 The Penguin’s Beau Gunn to discuss the top stories of the week. The half-hour “Beats and a Beer” segment airs Fridays at 4 p.m.
This week we talk about the opening of the new Waffle House in downtown Wilmington — for some, an exciting new addition, for others, a reminder of the old Soapbox Laundro-Lounge, where local and national music acts alike got their start.
We also talked about The Avenue, the 44-acre project proposed for Military Cutoff Road that raised serious concerns about the area’s already over-capacity traffic situation last year. This time, a vote in City Council could allow council members to negotiate privately with the developers, a possibility that has some worried about a lack of transparency.
Lastly, we discuss North Carolina’s decision to reinstate an alligator hunting season for the first time since 1973 — and the “creative” restrictions the state put on how residents can catch an alligator.
