OCEAN ISLE — The Ocean Isle Beach Park is ready to receive upgrades after the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners approved a $4.47 million construction contract to Carmichael Construction Company of Southport to complete phase two of the park.

Phase two will bring four new ball fields, a press box with concession stand and restrooms, six pickleball courts, a dog park, parking improvements, a walking trail, fitness stations and two new basketball courts.

In January, the county began accepting bids to complete the project, with seven total bids received; Carmichael Construction was the lowest responsive bidder, according to county documents.

But according to a county report, there were three alternates the county wanted as part of the total project bid, the first would be the installation of basketball courts, the second would be sodding the baseball/softball fields, and the third would be the installation of a 6-gauge fencing system instead of 9-gauge.

The total bid without the alternatives was $4,382,711, but with the alternates the bid came in over budget by $74,776 – or a total of $4,552,711.

In an effort to keep the project within budget while keeping all three alternates, county staff reduced the proposal’s contingency line item by the nearly $75,000 to make the total bid $4.47 million.

The project is expected to take 12-months from a start date expected in spring.

“With approval of the award, staff anticipates Ocean Isle Beach Park will remain open for access to the tennis courts and playground area during construction,” county documents state.  “It is estimated that the general contractor will begin construction at the end of March or early April. Barring any major setbacks, this is anticipated to be a 12-month project.”

This is not the only upgrades to the Ocean Isle Beach Park that have been recently approved, in August of 2017 County Commissioners voted in favor of new LED sports field lighting for the park. The lighting is expected to cost nearly $900,000 bringing the total budget for upgrades to the park at $5.68 million.
