The feds could help pay your electric bill: Low Income Energy Assistance program open to applications

SOUTHEASTERN, N.C. — Between record low temperatures and increased cost in housing, local residents may be strapped for cash during the winter months.

Many residents have higher than usual electric bills due to increased costs during the cold winter months. Wilmington is offering one-time payments to energy vendors to help low-income households stay warm.

Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) is a federally-funded initiative awarded to low-income and at-risk households. Households may apply through their respective social services departments.

Eligible households may apply through March 31 or until funds run out.

Eligible households must:

  • Have at least one U.S. citizen or non-citizen who meets the eligibility criteria
  • Meet an income test
  • Have reserves at or below $2,250
  • Be responsible for its heating bills

Interested individuals must apply in person and bring:

  • ID
  • Verification of citizenship
  • Social Security number
  • Wage stubs, tax forms
  • Documents from provider
  • Asset documents including ownership and tax records
  • Copy of bills
According to Jessica Loeper, spokeswoman for the county, all low-income households are encouraged to apply for assistance.
