CAROLINA BEACH — Speed limit reductions to North Lake Park Boulevard are one step closer to moving forward.

A resolution has been drafted in the Town of Carolina Beach to reduce the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph between Dow Road and 600 feet north of Access Road. The changes were first discussed in November.

According to the resolution, “Town Council believes that this reduction in speed limit is for the best interest and safety of the residents and travel in the Town of Carolina Beach.”

While the resolution cites safety and the best interest of residents, Town Manager Michael Cramer admitted the changes were due to golf carts in the town unable to travel on the road.

“Several months ago, when council approved changes to the golf cart ordinance and the rules and regulations, one of the things we recognized … is a 45 m.p.h. speed limit and that the people that are in the Port Side Neighborhood cannot legally use a golf cart to get out onto Lake Park and to go down to another section that is legal for them to be in without illegally driving on Lake Park,” Cramer said.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation conducted a traffic study and recommended not changing the speed on the road since motorists would likely not follow it without strict enforcement.

The Town Council’s agenda for Jan. 9 has not been released yet, but the resolution was found in an internal email with the title of January Council Agenda Items.
