After fight with K9, dog shot by Brunswick County deputy euthanized

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office (BSCO) of Professional Standards is investigating the shooting of a dog in Brunswick County.

According to the news release, on Monday, Dec. 18, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a unnamed deputy with the BSCO Warrants Division was attempting to serve a warrant for Jamil Correa, 32, for failure to appear in Robeson County court.

Correa fled from the officer on foot and about twelve minutes later an officer with the BCSO K9 Unit arrived on scene to assist.

As the K9 officer and his canine partner were tracking the suspect through the yard of the residence, a dog that was chained in the yard of the residence broke loose from the chain, pursued the K9 deputy and began to attack the BCSO canine.

The K9 deputy instructed another individual at the residence to take control of the attacking dog but the individual refused. The K9 deputy then drew his duty weapon and fired one shot, wounding the dog.

The dog’s owner signed custody of the injured dog over the BCSO Animal Protective Services. The dog was later euthanized due to its injury.

Correa was later apprehended and charged with resisting a public officer.
