Update: Wanted counterfeiting suspect already arrested in Brunswick County, Leland PD files additional charges

Update: The suspect in the Lowes counterfeiting incident, Thadeus Justin Smith, was booked earlier this week by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office on other charges. Leland is charging him with felony charges of obtaining property by false pretenses and forgery. According to Lieutenant Jeremy Humphries, spokesman for the Leland PD, further chargers are anticipated. 

LELAND — Authorities are searching for a man wanted for using counterfeit money.

On Thursday, July 13, an unidentified man used counterfeit money while shopping at the Lowes Food in Leland. The store, located at 1152 East Cutler Crossing, later identified the money as fake and traced it to a customer using closed-circuit television footage.
