New Hanover County Sheriff seizes 37 dogs, owner charged with animal cruelty

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A county resident has been charged with animal cruelty and dozens of dogs have been confiscated after a months-long investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office on Friday said the investigation into Anita Brown, 107 Fairford Road, began in March. 

“Brown was advised on several occasions that she needed to improve the living conditions for the dogs that she had in her home,” a press release from the Sheriff’s Office states.

Friday, deputies with the Animal Services Unit executed a search warrant at Brown’s home. As a result, 37 dogs were removed from the home due to poor living conditions.  

Brown has been charged with 37 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty,” according to the release.

Brown was transported to the New Hanover County Detention Facility.
