WILMINGTON — Just before 7 a.m. this morning, Hilton, a twelve-ft. great white shark pinged off the coast of Bald Head Island.

The shark research organization OCEARCH tagged the male white shark off of Hilton Head Island, S.C., in March of this year. He spent some time off the Cape Fear in April, along with 8-ft. female shark Savannah.

Hilton returns to the Carolina shores after an extended vacation in Florida, where he visited the Keys, before taking a trip up to the Space Coast.

Hilton then made a bee line for the plentiful waters surrounding the Frying Pan Shoals, just in time for #NationalSharkAwareness day, and Discovery Channels annual summertime series, “Shark Week,” which begins Sunday, July 23.

OCEARCH is a non-profit organization that works track and unlock the secret patterns of sharks, specifically targeting great whites. Currently, they’re off the coast of the Northeastern United States as part of “Expedition Mid Atlantic,” tagging these sharks as they go. For more information, visit their website at OCEARCH.org, or follow them on Twitter for the latest shark updates.

You can also follow @HiltonTheShark on Twitter to see where he’ll show up next.
