Coastal Ambassador training to focus on water quality and reducing stormwater runoff

Training will take place July 12 at 7 p.m.

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — The North Carolina Coastal Federation’s Coastal Ambassador training this month will focus on what’s being done to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality.

This evening training will take place Wednesday, July 12, 7-8:30 p.m. Participants will meet at the Fred and Alice Stanback Coastal Education Center, 309 W. Salisbury Road, Wrightsville Beach, to learn more about the Bradley and Hewletts Creek Watershed Restoration Plan.

The federation has worked with the City of Wilmington, the Town of Wrightsville Beach and other groups to reduce polluted stormwater runoff in the area by implementing a number of projects. These include installing swales, planting rain gardens and putting in previous surfaces. Stormwater runoff is the greatest polluter of coastal waterways.

“We’re excited for our Coastal Ambassadors to learn more about the work we’ve done to reduce stormwater runoff, as well as about the partnerships we’ve formed to help make this work possible,” said Jessica Gray, coastal outreach associate at the Wrightsville Beach office.

Coastal Ambassadors can represent the federation at various events around the area. They must attend five training meetings per year and participate in a minimum of three federation events. This program is designed for participants 16 years or older.

Coastal Ambassador trainings alternate monthly between evening meetings and day trips. There have been two so far this year, with more scheduled for Aug. 18, Sept. 13, Oct. 11 and Nov. 15.

Registration for the training is required and can be done at nccoast.org/events. For more information on this event or on Coastal Ambassador training in general, contact Jessica Gray at jessicag@nccoast.org or 910-509-2838.
