WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Municipal Golf course, or the “muni” as it’s commonly referred to, has reported a record setting 3,007 rounds of golf played this past February.
To put that into perspective: with only 28 days in February, that’s more than 107 games played per day.
Melissa Talbert, communications manager for the City of Wilmington, said the course saw a 51 percent increase in revenue from the record breaking month, due in part to the unseasonably warm winter in southeastern N.C.
According to the National Weather Service, typical high temperatures for February in Wilmington are around 67 degrees, February 2017 saw temperatures peak at 79 degrees on more than one occasion.
This, coupled with ongoing course renovations, led record numbers of golfers turn out to take advantage of the early spring weather.
Since 2013, the Donald Ross designed course has been undergoing renovations and additions. The latest, sponsored by The First Tee of Greater Wilmington, is nearing completion.
According to the City of Wilmington, the “First Tee Practice Area at the Muni” will consist of a short three-hole course, practice green, and a new chipping green (by the first hole). In addition, the ninth hole will be getting new tees, as well as new sod on the fairway.
The First Tee program practice area is on track to open in time for the Wells Fargo Championship in May.
