BRUNSWICK COUNTY — If you see smoke around Orton Plantation over the next couple of months, don’t be alarmed.
Orton Plantation has begun its annual controlled burns this month, which will continue this spring. According to the Orton Plantation, the burns will take place until May 1 as the weather allows and permits are available.
The annual controlled burns to improve forest health, bring back longleaf pines, and restore habitats.
Area residents should be aware that smoke may be visible in the area and may, at times, reduce visibility on N.C. 133. Those in New Hanover County, including Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach, may be able to see and smell smoke at times.
Orton Plantation is working with local authorities for the controlled burn, including the North Carolina Forest Service, the North Carolina Department of Air Quality, Brunswick County Fire Department and Emergency Services, and New Hanover County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services.
