NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The bond is set at $1 million dollars for a teen charged in connection with a Saturday shooting that killed a 57-year-old man.
Khai Anthony Ressler, 17, appeared in New Hanover County District Court on a first-degree murder charge Monday morning. Ressler appeared in-person for the court appearance before Judge Chad E. Hogston.
Ressler is charged with the death of 57-year-old Oscar Curtis Adams at a home in the 200 block of Angel Island Road in southern New Hanover County, according to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer.
Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at the home at 6 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived at the scene, they found Adams with a gunshot wound to the head. A New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office incident report indicates a rifle is suspected as a weapon in the case.
Judge Hogston said that because of his age, Ressler cannot face the death penalty in the case. Instead, Ressler faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, if convicted of the first-degree murder charge.
No other charges have been filed in the case. According to district court records, Ressler has one pending charge of no operators license.
The judge ordered Ressler to be held at the New Hanover County Jail under a $1 million secured bond. His next appearance is scheduled for March 23.
