LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Super Markets is voluntary recalling some varieties of its store brand pancake and waffle mixes after being informed by a supplier that milk powder used as an ingredient may contain salmonella.
The pancake mixes were sold at Publix stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.
The affected products include Publix brand Premium Pancake and Waffle Mixes in three flavors: Blueberry, banana chocolate chip and pumpkin. They can be identified by their global trade item numbers (universal product codes) 4141503603, 4141503503 and 4141503703 respectively.
The recall is effective Dec. 8, according to the Federal Food and Drug Administration.
Maria Brous, Publix media and community relations director, said there have been no reported cases of illness at this time.
“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted product has been removed from all store shelves,” Brous said.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. According to the FDA, most people affected by Salmonella recover without treatment.
However, in some cases patients may need hospitalization. Elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness, according to the FDA.
Customers who have purchased these pancake mixes may return the product to their local Publix store for a full refund, according to a statement released by the company through the FDA.
