WILMINGTON — Thanksgiving is almost upon us and a local organization dedicated to area veterans and active service military is hosting a free holiday meal.
Warrior Family Ministries is hosting the event and both donations and volunteers are needed for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Kim Kidd, organizer of the event and principle at the new Eagle Point Academy, said this year, Warrior Family Ministries will host its Thanksgiving Day meal at its new location, 231 Central Blvd. in Wilmington, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., or until food runs out.
Last year, Warrior Family Ministries served more than 300 people for Thanksgiving. But Kidd said, the event isn’t just for veterans and active military members; families of first responders and those who are in need or who may spend the holiday alone are welcome to attend.
The non-profit organization is looking for volunteers to work the event and food donations are needed for a plentiful and happy holiday feast.
Kidd said the organizations biggest items of need are hams, turkey and Boston butts, since those items serve a lot of people. Side items and desserts are also needed for the Thanksgiving meal.
“We won’t turn anything away and we’re also taking donations for the food pantry as well,” Kidd said.
Warrior Family Ministries also keeps a 24-hour food pantry open at the Central Boulevard location to serve local families in need. Items such as canned food and shelf-safe goods will be needed to stock the pantry not just for Thanksgiving, but throughout the holiday season, Kidd said.
