Hurricane Matthew: Updated school closings

SOUTHEASTERN, NORTH CAROLINA — Hurricane Matthew is causing area closings and delays around the Cape Fear area, and now one area school system has joined the list, while others are still waiting to make final plans.

Pender County Schools

Due to the forecasted impact of Hurricane Matthew, Pender County Schools Spokeswoman Miranda Roberts said schools will release students two hours early on Friday, Oct. 7. All after school programs on Friday as well as scheduled weekend activities have been cancelled.

“Pender County Schools is continuing to work with Emergency Management to monitor the track of this storm,” Roberts said.  “Parents, staff and community members will be notified should further cancellations or delays be necessary.”

New Hanover County Schools

New Hanover County Schools will operate on a half-day schedule on Friday, Oct. 7.

Elementary schools will be released at noon; middle and high schools will be released at 1 p.m; JC Roe Center, Isaac Bear and Wilmington Early Colleges will be released at 11:30 a.m.

There will be no school for Howe Pre-K and Johnson Pre-K students.

Staff will be released as soon as possible after students are dismissed.

Brunswick County Schools

Brunswick County Schools will be closed to students and staff on Friday, Oct. 7. According to the school system’s Facebook page, all school buildings will be closed except for those that could be used as emergency shelters. Visit its Facebook page or Twitter feed for more information.

Essential personnel are being asked to communicate with their immediate supervisor for further instructions.
 
All school buildings will be closed with the exception of those which may be used by emergency officials as shelters.

Higher education

University of North Carolina – Wilmington

All classes and events canceled as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. A mandatory evacuation has been issued for students by noon Thursday. The university announced Thursday afternoon that it will close and suspend all services at 12 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.

Employees whose shifts begin at 12 p.m., or later on Friday should not report to work unless otherwise advised by supervisors. Faculty and staff should consult the Adverse Weather Policy (Condition 1) to determine their best personal course of action for Friday morning until 12 p.m. and throughout this weather event.

A decision regarding the timing of students’ and employees’ return to campus will be made and communicated as soon as possible in the coming days. The university will continue to post updates on its emergency alert page.

Cape Fear Community College

Cape Fear Community College will close all campus locations Friday, Oct. 7, at noon. This includes the Wilmington campus, North Campus (Castle Hayne), Alston W. Burke Center in Surf City, and the Burgaw Center.

The College will remain closed throughout the weekend. Students and employees should monitor www.cfcc.edu, my.CFCC.edu, and CFCC’s Facebook and Twitter accounts for updates. Students are also encouraged to call the CFCC emergency information hotline at (877) 799-2322 for closing updates.

Brunswick Community College

Brunswick Community College will close at 12 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. This includes the Fitness & Aquatics Center and OWA. The College will reopen on Monday, Oct. 10 under normal operating hours.
