BRUNSWICK COUNTY – Schools in Brunswick County will operate on a regular schedule on Friday. The announcement was made after the latest updates for what has been upgraded to Hurricane Hermine predicted it will not hit this area until late afternoon or in the early evening on Friday.

An announcement Thursday afternoon stated: “Brunswick County school officials continue to work closely with officials from Brunswick County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service. Based on the latest forecast information, Brunswick County Schools will operate on regular schedule for Friday, Sept. 2.

“We will continue to monitor the storm and although unlikely at this time, will notify the public immediately if there is any change.”

While the storm was upgraded to hurricane status on Thursday afternoon, it will have been over land for several hours before it hits southeastern North Carolina and is expected to be reduced in category by that time. The area is still expected to have heavy rain and possible flash flooding, however.

Due to the storm, several Friday events were postponed or canceled.

Others are waiting for updated information before making decisions. The University of North Carolina- Wilmington earlier in the day had announced that it was monitoring the latest storm information prior to making any decisions regarding campus closings.
