Memorial Day closings in the Cape Fear region; open area attractions

In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, several area government offices will be closed and some services will be adjusted.

City of Wilmington

City of Wilmington offices will be closed on Monday, May 30. Trash service will run on a regular schedule.

City trash customers who normally have their trash and yard waste picked up on Mondays are asked to have all items curbside by 7:30 a.m. Monday. City recycling customers who are on the GREEN schedule and normally have their recycling collected on Mondays should place their recycling containers curbside by 7:30 a.m.

New Hanover County

All New Hanover County government offices will be closed Monday. The county’s Household Hazardous Waste facility and New Hanover County landfill will be open.

Brunswick County

Brunswick County government offices will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. All country libraries, the solid waste office and convenient centers will also be closed. The county landfill and curbside garbage and recycling collection will operate on a regular schedule on Monday, May 30.

Other

All federal and state offices will be closed Monday. The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail and banks will be closed. All town offices at Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach will also close.

Lifeguards at Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach will begin to man the beach strands Memorial Day weekend. The Wrightsville Beach ocean rescue team will be at 13 lifeguard stand locations this weekend between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day, depending on the crowds. Carolina Beach lifeguards will be posted at 20 lifeguard stands between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day over the holiday weekend.

Several area attractions, including the U.S.S. North Carolina and the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher, will be open on Memorial Day.

The Wilmington Family YMCA will open the City of Wilmington public swimming pools over the Memorial Day weekend. The three city pools are located at located at Legion Stadium, Northside near the WPD headquarters and Robert Strange Park. Earlier this month, the Wilmington City Council approved a two-year agreement with the YMCA to operate the pools and the city’s Northside Splashpad, which will allow the pools to be open for more hours, provide more programming and increase retention of lifeguards.
