Two brothers have been charged with first-degree murder in a late April shooting that killed a 32-year-old man.

Christopher Maurice Wigfall, 23, and Rashaun Dawayne Nugent, 20, two Wilmington brothers, were each charged in the April 30 death of Lavar Desmond Riley Jr., according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.

Wilmington detectives opened a homicide investigation after Riley succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head while being treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Police said Riley was shot in the 1000 block of Orange Street at about 2:45 a.m. April 29.

Witness reported three black male suspects left the scene headed south from the shooting in the area of Gores Row. While both Wigfall and Nugent are gang members, Lindsay said the shooting did not appear to be gang-related.

Members of the Wilmington Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Wigfall and Nugent Wednesday at a home in the 1500 block of Dog Whistle Lane in the Murrayville area in northern New Hanover County, according to Lindsay. Wigfall was taken into custody at about 11 a.m. Wednesday, while Nugent was arrested later, around 4 p.m.

According to the N.C. Department of Corrections, Nugent has been convicted of four felonies, including selling a schedule I controlled substance, possession of a schedule I controlled substance and common law robbery. Wigfall has been convicted of three felonies, including selling a schedule I controlled substance and selling or delivering a schedule I controlled substance. Prison records show he has also been convicted of more than 10 misdemeanors.

The investigation is still ongoing, Lindsay said. The two brothers were booked at the New Hanover County Jail without bonds.
