A legendary Outer Banks sweet shop is coming to Mayfaire.

Duck Donuts announced on Facebook this week that it was headed to the Wrightsville Beach-area shopping center. Paige Somervell, marketing director for Mayfaire Town Center, confirmed Friday that the store planned to open its doors in late spring.

The business got its start a decade ago in the quaint and quiet Outer Banks, a place where Duck Donuts founder Russell DiGilio and his family routinely visited.

“After a series of vacations, it occurred to my family and me that something was missing. We realized that there were no fresh donuts to be found in the area,” he said in a release on the donut shop’s website.

From that realization came Duck Donuts, which became widely popular along the tourist-driven Outer Banks coastline. The business now has 13 locations, including the upcoming Wilmington launch, up and down the east coast.

With a “keep it simple” kind of philosophy, Duck Donuts operates on the principle that you can’t go wrong with a warm donut and a hot cup of coffee.

But unlike the typical breakfast destination, Duck Donuts takes a made-to-order approach to its creations. Customers can have their vanilla cake donuts topped with a variety of coatings–from the tried-and-true glaze to peanut butter, maple and strawberry icings. Toppings include sprinkles, coconut, peanuts and the crowd favorite, bacon.

Ahead of its arrival in Wilmington, Duck Donuts was recently named by MSN.com as one of the spots to find the “world’s best donuts.”
