An English bulldog stabbed at a Welch Way home Tuesday night has survived surgery and is now recovering from her injuries.
The bulldog, named Daisy, became the subject of an animal cruelty case after deputies found her stabbed and cut around her throat at a home in the 1500 block of Welch Way at about 10:30 p.m., according to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer. Daisy was in critical condition and taken by her owner to an emergency veterinary hospital.
Master Sheriff’s Deputy J. Gonnelli visited Daisy at a local animal trauma hospital on Friday to see how she was recovering, Brewer said. Daisy had approximately 15 sutures placed in her neck and is taking antibiotics.
Though having experienced a traumatic incident, Daisy is “walking around and eager for physical contact,” Brewer said. She will continue to receive care through the weekend, at a minimum, he added.
Daisy was one of two dogs stabbed at the Welch Way home on Tuesday. Shortly after deputies arrested a suspect in the case, deputies got call from another resident of the Welch Way home who reported she had found her dog dead, wrapped up in a sheet and thrown in a creek behind the house.
The dog, a female pit bull named Jane, had been stabbed more than 100 times, Brewer said.
Lorraine Marie Villanueva, 35, of Welch Way, faces two counts of felony cruelty to animals in connection with the case. She remains at the New Hanover County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond.
