Due to the impact Hurricane Joaquin is expected to have on the Cape Fear Region later this week, the annual Riverfest celebration in downtown Wilmington has been postponed.
The festival, originally set for Oct. 2-4 along Water Street, will now be held during a weekend in November, according to Riverfest chairman Chris Snowden. Snowden said the festival committee would be working with vendors and the City of Wilmington to determine the exact dates of the rescheduled event.
Threat of the coming storm has prompted many local officials to cancel or postpone several area programs and events. If you have a closing or cancellation, please email closings@portcitydaily.com.
Wilmington
Based on the latest information available, UNC-Wilmington officials have decided to keep the main campus and Onslow Extension Site open, with all classes and events proceeding on schedule. Officials advise against students leaving campus or traveling to campus given the possibility of heavy rains, hazardous roads and potential flood conditions. All campus services are operating on their usual schedules. Students who do not feel comfortable traveling to or from classes should exercise their best judgment.
The Children’s Museum of Wilmington has canceled its Family Farm Day, originally set for Saturday, Oct. 3. It will now be held in May 2016. The museum intends to remain open this weekend.
New Hanover County
All New Hanover County museums, libraries and county parks will be closed Saturday and Sunday.
The New Hanover County Art on the Arboretum scheduled this weekend has been moved to Oct. 9-11.
The Pay it Forward fundraiser for the U.S.S. North Carolina this Friday, Oct. 2 is canceled and will be rescheduled for later this year. A new date for the battleship fundraiser has not been announced.
New Hanover County jail – the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has closed inmate visitation on Saturday and Sunday. Weekender Jail is also closed. The Public Safety College/Fire Training School scheduled for Oct. 2-4 at Cape Fear Community College’s north campus has been canceled.
Wrightsville Beach
Bark in the Park (Saturday, Oct. 3) and its scheduled rain date (Sunday, Oct. 4) have both been canceled.
The Local Government Federal Credit Union’s Shred & Protect event, originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3, has been postponed to a date yet to be determined.
Carolina Beach
Canal Drive on Carolina Beach is closed due to high water, according to town officials.
Freeman Park will close at 7 p.m. Friday and remain closed through Sunday, based on high tide predictions, according to town officials.
Carolina Beach Sweep scheduled for Saturday has been postponed until Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The Run Carolina Beach event on Saturday, Oct. 3, has been canceled.
The 3rd Annual Michael McGowan Co-ed Softball Tournament that was set to run Oct. 2-4 has been postponed. A new date has not been set. Visit the tournament’s Facebook page for more information.
The Town of Carolina Beach’s operations committee’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6 has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 in the conference room, 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd.
Kure Beach
The Southport-Fort Fisher ferry’s 1 p.m. run at the Southport site has been canceled Thursday due to high tide. Otherwise, the ferry is currently running on schedule.
The Fort Fisher National Guard Training Center will be closed starting at noon on Friday.
Brunswick County
The 2015 U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament Board of Directors announced after much consideration and consultation about weather concerns due to Hurricane Joaquin, the tournament scheduled Oct. 1-3, has been Oct. 30-31. The new tournament schedule will be as follows: registration on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. – midnight at the Southport Marina and fishing on Friday, Oct. 30 from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31 from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The Lower Cape Fear Hospice Sunshine Camp in Brunswick County, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled. A Hospice spokeswoman said the event will be rescheduled, with a date and time to be determined.
