Port City Daily launches free obituaries

The time-honored tradition of telling the story of the ones you loved should not have a price tag. That’s why Port City Daily is now providing free obituaries as a public service, in addition to the free local news it’s brought the Wilmington area for the past year.

“Early on we tried to produce daily obituaries at no cost to our readers but just didn’t have the staff to do it right,” said Port City Daily publisher Kim Lenz. “Thanks to the support of our faithful readers and advertisers, we’re now at a point where we could hire a full-time obituary writer to help tell the stories of local loved ones who have died.”

Lenz said Port City Daily will not charge for placement of obituaries or accompanying photos, but instead rely on local funeral homes to share their death notices. Port City Daily will also accept obituaries submitted by the families and friends of those who have died, whether they were lifelong residents, recent transplants or moved away but had ties to the area.

“Telling someone’s life story shouldn’t come with a price tag, especially at what is for many a difficult time,” said Lenz. “At Port City Daily there’s no subscription fee, no requirement to scale an online paywall, no charge to look up something in our archives. We’re completely free for our readers, always.”

Lenz said new hire Amanda Thames will compile obituaries and speak with families about their loved ones’ stories. Thames will produce regular feature obituaries as well.

Readers are asked to contact Thames by email, [email protected].

Obituaries may be found at Port City Daily by clicking here or by going to the homepage and clicking on the tab that says “Obits.”
