Carolina Beach Town Council to meet Tuesday

In the wake of last week’s sudden resignations, Carolina Beach Town Council has called a meeting for Tuesday, Nov. 20, to discuss next steps in recruiting a new town manager and two councilmembers.

The three remaining members—Mayor Pro Tem Steve Shuttleworth and Councilmembers Sarah Friede and Bob Lewis—will meet in closed session at 4:30 p.m. to discuss a personnel matter, followed by an open meeting at 5:30 p.m. to receive department updates, discuss ongoing recruitment for an interim town manager and continue discussion about filling the two vacancies on council.

Last week, Mayor Ray Rothrock, Town Manager Tim Owens and Councilman Lonnie Lashley abruptly resigned, following what Rothrock later described as Owens being “compelled” to do so by the rest of council. Planning Director Ed Parvin has been serving as manager in the interim, while Shuttleworth has been serving as acting mayor.

The town has advertised the manager position and solicited applications from residents interested in filling the two council positions. Letters of interest listing name, permanent residence address, contact information and any qualifications can be submitted to the human resources department.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, council will be updated and continue discussions regarding the Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point property on Dow Road and beach nourishment efforts. Council will meet at Carolina Beach Town Hall, located at 1121 North Lake Park Blvd. (U.S. 421).
