WILMINGTON — The suspect of a triple homicide at Landfall shopping center Saturday afternoon is in custody.
Wilmington police charged the alleged shooter with three counts of first-degree murder and firing into an occupied vehicle.
The incident took place in the Food Lion parking lot on Military Cutoff Road around 4 p.m. When officers arrived, the three victims — two adults and one juvenile — had succumbed to their injuries. The suspect was suffering a self-inflicted wound and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Wilmington Police Department has yet to release the names of those involved. As of Saturday evening, the motivation of the crimes was undetermined.
Detectives investigated through the night and the case is ongoing, according to WPD’s latest update.
The department issued the following statement:
“It is the intention of the Wilmington Police Department to eventually release all family aspects of this homicide; however, at this time we are still in the early stages of the investigation. Notifications have been made more difficult because of the family relationship of the suspect to the victims.
“We ask for patience as we work diligently to notify surviving family members of these victims. More information will be forthcoming in a later release. This was an isolated incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the surviving family members of the victims.”
