Funding secured for Gordon Road enhancements

Gordon Road, a high-traffic corridor between Interstate-40 and Market St., has been a hot spot for recent development projects in New Hanover County. The Landing at Lewis Creek is in the midst of requesting permission to build additional homes; and Hawthorne at Smith Creek, across the street from the Landing, is a now-completed apartment complex that hosts a swimming pool, Starbucks coffee bar and a 6,500-feet clubhouse. As construction spurred more vehicle traffic and a higher population in the area, the road itself has always been mostly a two-lane street, which has prompted both locals and politicians to make calls for infrastructure improvements in the area.

Chad Kimes, a division engineer for the N.C. Department of Transportation, said funding has recently been unlocked which will kickstart a lane-widening project on Gordon Road. Until recently, a DOT plan to widen the road was scheduled  to begin “right of way acquisition” in 2025, and the project lacked funding.

That just changed, Kimes said, and right of way acquisition is now slated to being in June 2022, and the target date to begin construction on the project, which will add lanes to Gordon Road, is set to begin in June 2024.
