WILMINGTON — The Battleship North Carolina Memorial has launched a license plate art contest open to North Carolina residents. The chosen artwork could inspire the design for the Battleship’s future North Carolina specialty license plate.
Artists are asked to create original artwork that interprets the Battleship North Carolina and the significance as the state’s World War 2 memorial. Entries may be illustrated, created digitally, painted, or done by using mixed-media and must be submitted digitally through the contest portal.
A $20 non-refundable entry fee is required per each submitted design; however, the artist’s entry fee may be waived with five license plate preorders, which will need to be verified. Each artist may submit two entries.
The deadline for submitting artwork is Sept. 25, 2026. Artwork submitted by the deadline will be displayed on the website, www.battleshipnc.com, and in the Battleship’s Wardroom. Voters both online and visiting the Battleship will determine the first, second, third, and People’s Choice winners during the Battleship’s 65th anniversary, Oct. 2-4, 2026, of it being stationed in Wilmington.
The first-place winner wins $1,000, the second-place winner wins $500, the third-place winner wins $250, and the People’s Choice winner wins $100. The winners will be announced no later than December 2026.
