KURE BEACH — North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is hosting its annual back-to-school beach cleanup Saturday, August 22, at Kure Beach.
The event, held at Ocean Front Park in Kure Beach, lasts two hours, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 10 a.m.
The beach clean up is for all students heading back to school, from toddlers to college students and beyond. Volunteers should show off school spirit by wearing their school’s gear. Whoever shows the most spirit will be taking home a green prize.
“These beach cleanups are a great way to begin the school year by keeping the health of our ocean top of mind,” NCAFF assistant events coordinator Laine Cafferty said. “We hope that by starting the school year with a green mindset, all of us working together can make a difference in protecting species and ecosystems.”
The aquarium encourages students looking to start the school year off with the environment at the forefront, with ideas on how to be green available at Your Green Back-to-School List.
Free parking will be provided to volunteers by the town. The aquarium provides reusable gloves, trash pickers and bags. Both the town and the aquarium ask that participants not bring single-use water bottles, bags, gloves or coffee cups to the event.
“We provide the reusable cleanup items to make it even easier for volunteers to be green,” Cafferty said.
