NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The county is bringing local experts and partners to provide resources that promote personal safety, incident prevention, and emergency preparedness later this month.
New Hanover County will host Community Safety Day on March 21, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center on South College Road.
“Community Safety Day is an opportunity to help the public protect themselves and their loved ones, while keeping their information safe and secure,” SRC Director Amber Smith said in a press release. “We are excited to host a wide array of services and connect residents to local partners with safety resources that promote healthy lifestyles, especially for older adults in our community.”
Attendees will have access to Medication Take Back, Shred-a-Thon, and CarFit with AARP.
Medication Take Back is for the secure disposal of unused or expired medications, to prevent illicit use; items can be dropped off via drive-through or walk-up. Sharps and needles will not be accepted.
The Shred-a-Thon safely disposes of confidential paper documents. Each participant is allowed two boxes or bags of documents to destroy, and shredding will be available until the truck is full.
CarFit with the AARP program will provide vehicle safety review during the event as well. Experts will check airbags, safety seats and other protective devices for proper installation.
Other participating organizations include the Area Agency on Aging, NHC Fire Rescue, NHC Sheriff’s Office, NC Senior Medicare Patrol, Novant Health, Office of State Fire Marshal, Safe Kids Cape Fear, and Wilmington Fire Department.
