NEW HANOVER COUNTY — An area shelter opens overnight to those who need respite of warmth as temperatures drop below freezing.
The Warming Shelter ILM reopens on Wednesday, since there is a chance for sleet overnight into Thursday. It will serve unhoused folks as a cold front comes through the region, operating nightly through Saturday, Feb. 22, at Grace UMC, 401 Grace St.
Check-in is daily at 5 p.m. and volunteers that run the shelter provide dinner and breakfast, beverages and snacks, and on some nights live music is also included.
It’s been a busy year for the shelter, which is opening for the fourth time since November. Last month, as snow blanketed the area, it operated for six days in a row and housed more than 100 people nightly
Volunteer sign-ups to help with setting up and breaking down the shelter, checking in people, cleaning and more is open here. Monetary donations to help it going are also accepted here and for those who wish to donate from the wishlist can access it here.
