WILMINGTON — The Riverlights area will get a new fire station on River Road.

Fire station number six will be constructed on a 3-acre parcel along River Road across from Riverlights Marina Village. A public groundbreaking will take place Aug. 3, 10 a.m., with public officials include Mayor Bill Saffo and Wilmington Fire Chief Steve Mason on hand.

“This fire station is needed to serve this growing area that includes Riverlights, Echo Farms and areas along South Independence Boulevard,” according to a release from the city.

Around $5.7 million of the projected was funded in the FY 22 budget as part of the Capital Improvement Fund. However, a resolution was passed in May for $7,223,697 to go to Samet Corporation of Greensboro to build the station; it required a supplemental appropriation of $3,062,000 for the project.

The fire station’s design was devised with input from the neighborhood to reflect the Riverlights architectural aesthetic.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held in Marina Village (turn onto Pier Master Point).
