BURGAW — Only seven weeks old, Puzzles the kitten is amongst the newer residents at Pender County Animal Shelter (PCAS).

As shelter manager Jewell Horton explained, ‘“kitten season” is bringing dozens of furry friends to the facility.

“There are just so many of them,” Horton said. “We have lots of little Puzzles running around. If anyone is thinking about adopting, now is the time.”

One of more than an estimated 80 kittens currently being cared for by PCAS, Puzzles was brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan.

“A sweet cat wandered up to this family and they started feeding her,” Horton said. “Well, before you knew it one cat had turned into an extra six kittens, and that’s when they decided to bring them here.”

Despite working diligently to advertise the small fluffy friends on social media, PCAS continues to be inundated.

“We’ve had more come in today than leave,” Horton said, “So that’s hard.”

Still, the staff remains optimistic that the fee-free adoption event scheduled for this weekend, may encourage prospective adopters to open their hearts and their homes. Featuring zero cost adoptions for adult animals to approved homes, Horton hopes the event may free up some much-needed space.

“Puzzles just loves to play and cuddle,” said Horton. “There are so many like her. So if they want an adult, there’s no cost this Saturday and Sunday, but if they want a kitten or a puppy, there will still be the regular charges.”

Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit PCAS this weekend, as fee-free adoptions for adult dogs and cats will be on offer. Visiting hours will be from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The shelter is located at 3280 New Savannah Road in Burgaw.
