WILMINGTON — Just over two years old, Dixie is a black lab mix with a playful personality.

“Another person saw Dixie in another shelter,” New Hanover Humane Society shelter associate Lisa Fawcett said.

After one family initially had adopted Dixie but then changed their mind, “the rescue person saw her there and brought her here” Fawcett explained.

With boundless enthusiasm and an affectionate nature to match, Dixie quickly won over the hearts of the staff and volunteers at NHHS. “Her temperament is fantastic,” Fawcett said. “She’s very playful but also is happy being a lap dog and having her tummy rubbed.”

A mid-sized dog, Dixie’s favorite activities include playing with visitors and chasing balls. Unlike other furry residents, Dixie seems to be friendly towards many other animals.

“We cat tested her and she seems fine,” Fawcett said. “We took her into our cat room and she didn’t seem to care.”

Filled with energy and eager to explore, NHHS volunteer Alexis Ferrell thinks that an engaging environment would be ideal for Dixie.

“An active family, definitely a fence would be a good fit,” Fawcett speculated.

“She’d probably be a fantastic beach dog. If you’re an active person looking for an active dog, she would be perfect.”

“She’s so sweet and kind,” Ferrell added. “you really can’t go wrong with a dog like her. It’s very easy to adopt. You get medication if needed, you get them up to date on their shots, you get an amazing new friend.”

Prospective adopters interested in meeting Dixie may do so at the  New Hanover Humane Society. The shelter is located in Wilmington at 2405 N. 23rd St. and can be reached at 910-763-6692. Visiting hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
