Where We Live: Dock Street bungalow affordably renovated

At 1520 Dock Street in downtown Wilmington, small renovations can go a long way

WILMINGTON — For the Crooks, renovating for less has been a venture years in the making.

Kevin and Karen Crooks moved into their Dock Street bungalow in 2015 after renting it out for several years.

“I think the house at one point was in a point of disrepair,” Kevin Crooks said. He had a handyman attitude and started chipping away at the 1912 cottage home one project at a time.

“Basically everything from the drywall out we’ve redone,” he said.

A picket fence was added to frame the lavender-slate colored home which rests on the corner of Dock and 16th Street.

The 1,596 square feet home is spacious inside, with the living, dining and kitchen rooms having no separating walls.

In both bathrooms, Crooks added shiplap walls and constructed double vessel sinks which sit atop black cabinets.

The entire home is decorated with white, craftsman-style trim that complements its modern and renovated interior. Wooden doors, glass doorknobs and antique style cabinets also help to blend the old with the new.

Outside, the Crooks sought the expertise of Thomas Huffman of T Huff Construction to craft a shed with sliding barn doors to make the best use of the space.

Fixing up a place is something that Crooks had his mind set on for some time.

“It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said.

Now the family has added two new additions, the Crooks are set to move on from the 105-year-old bungalow they’ve put love and work into throughout the years.
