Hammerheads get first win of the season in home opener

WILMINGTONThe Wilmington Hammerheads Wednesday won their first match of the team’s inaugural PDL campaign. The Hammerheads beat North Carolina FC 3-1.

Forward Tanner Roberts led all scoring with two goals. Midfielder Daniel Escobar scored the home team’s other goal.

The Hammerheads set the tempo of play early and kept it up well into the opening half. The first goal came in the 27th minute as Roberts got his head on the end of a cross by Jeremy Kelly on the right flank.

The second goal came moments later in the 32nd minute. That’s when Daniel Escobar danced past a defender and curled a shot past the keeper’s outstretched glove into the top corner.

The third goal also came in the first half after Roberts stole the ball off a defender and on to goal where he finished using the outside of his boot.

The second half saw the game’s action flip. North Carolina FC came out strong and stayed that way for the remainder of the match.  The Hammerheads were helped during this time by a goalkeeper Andrew Romig, who kept North Carolina out of the net until Matt scored in the 67th minute.

“It was a great start off our home schedule with a victory,” Head Coach Kevin Johnson said. “The boys have been training very well and were itching to get out on the home game field. I couldn’t be prouder of the effort and I’m even happier to say that I know we can play better than we did tonight.”

The win beings the Hammerhead’s season record to 1 Win and 2 Losses.

The Hammerheads will take the field in a make-up game from May 24 next Monday, June 5. For tickets and information on the Wilmington Hammerheads 2017 Season, go to www.wilmingtonhammerheadsyouth.com/pdl.
