CASWELL BEACH — Wayne E. Motts is the chief executive officer of The National Civil War Museum located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It is one of the largest museums in the country dedicated to telling the complete story of the war from the viewpoint of both sides.
North Carolina played a major role in the war, and that will be explained by Motts when he serves as guest speaker for the Tuesday, April 4, meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table.
His presentation is entitled, “North Carolina Artifacts at the National Civil War Museum,” a topic of interest to people residing in North Carolina.
The museum holds more than 4,000 three-dimensional artifacts and over 21,000 archival items, including manuscripts, diaries, letters, photographic images, newspapers and correspondence dating from 1861 – 1865.
The Round Table audience attending this meeting will join Motts on a journey of North Carolina’s part in the war as illustrated by some of the rarest surviving Civil War artifacts in the museum’s collection.
This journey is best communicated by him based on his credentials. For starters, he was one of the youngest persons ever to complete the licensing process to be a licensed battlefield guide at Gettysburg National Military Park. He has guided parties around the famous field for 28 years. He has spoken to a wide range of historical organizations and groups on various Civil War topics, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
In addition to speaking engagements, Motts is an accomplished author, publishing many books and articles, including “Trust in God and Fear Nothing, General Lewis A. Armistead,” and “Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg: A Guide to the Most Famous Attack in American History.” He can also be seen on numerous television documentaries and videos produced by the History Channel, the TNT network and the A&E channel.
The Tuesday, April 4, meeting will be held at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Everyone is invited. Registration and refreshments begin at 6:30 p.m.; the program begins at 7 p.m.. The guest admission fee is $10, and can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues.
