HAMPSTEAD — Topsail came from behind late in the match to defeat Cape Fear Academy 2-1 on Thursday night in Hampstead. After a scoreless first half, Cape Fear Academy scored in the 43rd minute following a flurry of action in front of the goal.
The score remained 1-0 until the 72nd minute when Lexi Gilley tied the game at 1-1 on a free kick goal from around 25 yards following a Cape Fear foul on Jamie Keisman. Topsail scored again in the 77th minute on a follow-shot goal by Carmen Pyrtle to take a 2-1 lead.
Cape Fear Academy almost tied the score in the 78th minute on a free kick from around 30 yards out but Topsail goalkeeper Hayley Childress punched the ball up and over the cross bar for what ended up being Cape Fear’s last serious scoring threat.
The Pirates were able to subsequently run out the final two minutes of the game.
Topsail’s record improves to 2-0-1. The Pirates next game is on Tuesday night February 7th at home against Coastal Christian at 6:00.
