GOAL! Watch UNCW soccer’s top 10 tallies video from the fall season; Hoggard standout announces Seahawk commitment

WILMINGTON — Competing in one of the toughest divisions in all of NCAA Division I Soccer year in and year out, UNC-Wilmington has had a rich history of success and recently released a highlight reel of its Top 10 goals from the 2016 season.

The Seahawks men’s team, which posted an 8-5-3 record last fall, made its fifth consecutive appearance in the CAA Championship field after posting a 3-2-3 mark in league play. The team secured a No. 3 seed in the bracket before a season-ending defeat in the CAA Quarterfinals to College of Charleston.

Redshirt junior forward Julio Moncada led UNCW offensively. The Puerto Cortes, Honduras, native scored eight goals, including a CAA-best six game-winning markers, with three assists.

Coach Aidan Heaney will soon be welcoming in his newest freshman class with spring signing day right around the corner. Although not yet officially announced, Hoggard High School junior standout Cesar Cruz has already announced his attentions via Twitter to continue his dreams of playing college soccer on the local campus. National Signing Day is set for Feb. 1.

UNCW soccer will get its spring training session underway in March, typically with five or so friendly matches leading up to the programs annual “Harry’s Game.” “Harry’s Game” is aimed at bringing attention, awareness, and acceptance for people with Down Syndrome, as well as those with other physical and intellectual disabilities named in honor of Heaney’s son, Harry. Proceeds go to the TOPSoccer Program and the Special Olympics of New Hanover County.
