Friday night basketball scoreboard: Ashley boys hold off Hoggard for first win in five tries

Ashley’s Daitreon Daye led all scorers with 13 points as the Screaming Eagles beat Hoggard for the first time in five tries following a 51-44 victory in Monkey Junction. Daye’s points came on four field goals and 5-of-9 free throws. Ashley also got 10 points from Bryston Davis and seven points from Jordan Gagum.

The Screaming Eagles went on a 5-0 spurt at the end of the first quarter to take a 12-8 edge after eight minutes of action. Tyler Steinman cut the deficit to a bucket with a three-pointer early in the second period, but Jiques Morant made it 16-12 with one of two field goals in the game.

Keigan Meyer added to the cushion with his only shot from long range late in the first half and Gagum finished the push to give Ashley a 26-19 advantage at the break.

Steinman finished with nine points for Hoggard (1-1, 2-4) and Tyler Matlock added seven, but the Vikings went 15-for-33 from the free throw line.

Ashley led by as many as 13 in the third quarter before Steinman hit his second three-pointer to spark a 7-2 run for Hoggard. The Vikings trailed 36-30 moving into the final frame.

The Screaming Eagles held on down the stretch to grab their sixth win a row. Ashley is 2-0 in conference and 6-1 overall.

New Hanover 69            South Brunswick 54

 A 12-0 run by New Hanover over the final four minutes of regulation handed the Wildcats its fifth consecutive win in a 69-54 result against South Brunswick. Ramello Williams put in an overall effort with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, with eight rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Hayden Edgar led all scorers with 14 points. New Hanover carried a six-point advantage into the second quarter and a 40-23 lead at the break. Jahann Simmons finished in double figures with 10 points for the Wildcats, all of which came in the first half.

South Brunswick (0-2, 5-4) cut the lead to seven moving into the fourth period thanks to a big effort from Xavier Williams, Andrew Mosley and Kareem Randolph. Williams and Mosley paced the Cougars with 12 points each.

Freddie Taylor knocked down a pair of shots from downtown over the final eight minutes to spark the decisive push. Edgar scored eight of his 14 points to aid the spurt. New Hanover turned a 51-43 lead into a double digit result in the fourth quarter.  New Hanover moved to 2-0 in conference and 5-1 overall.

Laney  55    Topsail 33

The Bucs opened conference play in emphatic fashion on Friday night as freshman Marc McLaurin led Laney with 17 points and seven rebounds in a 55-33 road win against Topsail.

Chris Bennett added 14 points and five boards. Laney won its fourth straight to move to 1-0 in conference and 6-3 overall. Topsail is now 0-2 in the division, with a 4-4 overall mark.

 

Coastal Christian 66       Wilmington Christian 35

Michael Parker recorded a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds on Friday night to lead Coastal Christian in a 66-35 win against Wilmington Christian.

Girls basketball

Hoggard 57     Ashley 30

Hoggard shot 45 percent from the floor and knocked down six attempts from beyond the arc on Friday night in a 57-29 victory against Ashley. Blair Barefoot and Alani Fisher scored 14 points apiece to lead four Vikings in double figures.

Barefoot knocked down a pair of treys. Lola Lovitt chipped in with 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting and six rebounds. Point guard Tara Poteat added 11 points, while Elli Louthan pulled down eight boards.

The Vikings led 29-15 at the break. Hoggard moved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference. Ashley dropped to 1-1 in the division and 3-5 on the year.

 New Hanover 72     South Brunswick 20 

The Wildcats cruised to its fifth straight win following a 72-20 rout over South Brunswick.

Ayonna Cotten led the way with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She combined with Azariah Fields to sink nine shots from downtown. Fields scored 18 points, while Kayleigh Merrell added 10 points and seven rebounds.

New Hanover led 25-6 after the opening eight minutes of play and never looked back. Eight different played found the scoring column for the Wildcats. Fields also dished seven assists.

New Hanover is now 2-0 in league play and 5-1 overall. South Brunswick fell to 0-2 in conference and 4-5 on the year.

 Topsail 37      Laney 27

Topsail defeated Laney for the first time in school history on Friday night with a 37-27 victory.

Coastal Christian 43     Wilmington Christian 39

Kristina Quigley scored a team-high 15 points on five shots from long range to lead Coastal Christian in a 43-39 triumph on Friday night. Lydia Bradshaw scored a game-high 17 points for Wilmington Christian.

The Centurions cut a five-point deficit at the break to a one possession game moving into the final frame. Coastal Christian outscored the Patriots 17-12 during the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Sam Stanko scored 11 points and Lilian Quinn added 10 for the Centurions.
